چکیده

Hedonic techniques were developed to control for quality differences across goods and over time in order to construct constant-quality aggregate price measures. When the available data are a panel of high-frequency data on models whose characteristics are constant over time, matched-model price indexes can also be used to obtain constantquality price measures. We show this by demonstrating that, given data of this type, certain matched-model indexes yield price measures that are numerically close to those obtained using hedonic techniques. * This paper is a condensed version of a paper that was presented at the CRIW workshop on Price Measurement at the NBER Summer Institute, July 31-August 1, 2000 and is available at http://www.nber.org. For helpful comments, we thank Ernst Berndt, Jack Triplett, colleagues at the Board and participants of the CRIW workshop. An Experimental Component Index for the CPI: From Annual Computer Data to Monthly Data on Other Goods

Until recently the Consumer Price Index consisted solely of “matched model” component indices. The latter are constructed by BLS personnel who visit stores and compare prices of goods with the same set of characteristics over successive periods. This procedure is subject to a selection bias. Goods that were not on the shelves in the second period were discarded and hence never contributed price...

Using Hedonic Prices to Estimate Quality Changes concerning Iranian Automobile Market

Abstract This paper sketches a model of product differentiation according to the hedonic hypothesis that is based on the theory of consumer behavior of Lancaster (1971). Lancaster suggested that utility is derived from the characteristics of the good and not the good itself. Thus, from the perception of the consumer, every characteristic has a price. This is the hedonic (or implicit) price. We ...

Apparel Prices and the Hulten/Bruegel Paradox

While the CPI may have overstated inflation in the mid-1990s by about one percent per year, as concluded by the Boskin Commission, it does not make sense to extrapolate that rate of bias backwards over long periods of time. The "Hulten-Bruegel paradox" shows that any such exercise in backward extrapolation yields levels of real consumption two or four centuries ago that are implausibly low, bar...
